A garage door that has become louder is telling you something has changed. This page explains what different noises can point to, how rollers, hinges and tracks wear, and when maintenance is no longer enough.

Services for Spring homeowners.

  • Maintenance & Safety Inspections for lubrication, tightening and adjustment when parts are still in good condition.

  • Garage Door Repair when worn rollers, cracked hinges or a misaligned track need replacing or correcting.

  • Spring Service when a loud bang is followed by a heavy door, which points to a spring problem rather than wear.

Also available: cable repair, openers & remotes and new door installation.

What the noise can tell you.

  • Squeaking or creaking: often dry or worn rollers and hinges.
  • Grinding or scraping: worn rollers, a door rubbing its track, or parts of the opener drive.
  • Rattling or vibration: hardware that has worked loose.
  • A single loud bang: possibly a broken spring. Stop using the door.

Rollers, hinges and tracks.

Rollers carry the door along its tracks, and hinges let the sections bend as the door turns overhead. Both wear with use. Rollers can crack, wobble or stop turning smoothly, and hinges can crack or loosen. A track that has been knocked out of line makes the door rub and work harder.

When maintenance is not enough.

Lubrication can quiet dry parts that are otherwise sound. It will not fix a worn roller, a cracked hinge, a bent track or a door that is out of balance. If the noise comes back soon after lubrication, or is getting louder, the door needs an assessment rather than more lubricant.

What to include in your request.

  • When the noise happens: opening, closing, or at the start of travel.
  • Where it seems to come from, such as one side, the top, or the opener.
  • What it sounds like: squeak, grind, rattle or bang.
  • Whether anything has been tried already, such as lubrication.
  • Your ZIP code and the best number to reach you.

Questions from Spring homeowners.

Can I lubricate the door myself?

Light lubrication of hinges and rollers, following the manufacturer’s guidance and using a product suited to garage doors, is generally fine. Do not adjust springs, cables or the brackets at the bottom of the door.

Is the noise coming from my opener or my door?

It can be either, and sometimes both. We check the door and the opener separately so the right part is addressed.

Will a quieter opener fix a noisy door?

Not if the noise comes from the door’s rollers, hinges or tracks. Those need attention on the door itself.
