Garage door openers, remotes and keypads
An opener that hesitates, reverses or ignores the remote is frustrating — and sometimes a sign of a problem with the door itself. We work out whether the fault is in the opener, its sensors and controls, or the door it is trying to move, and explain the most sensible fix.
What this service covers
-
Opener troubleshooting
Openers that hum without moving, stop partway, reverse unexpectedly or run intermittently.
-
Safety sensors and reversal
Aligning and testing the photo-eye sensors and checking that the door reverses when it meets an obstruction.
-
Remotes, keypads and wall controls
Programming new or replacement remotes and keypads, and diagnosing wall buttons that have stopped working.
-
Opener replacement
Explaining replacement options when an opener is unreliable or no longer suits your door, then installing and setting it up.
Common signs
Common opener and control problems include:
- The opener light comes on but the door does not move
- The door reverses on its way down for no obvious reason
- The remote works only at close range, or not at all
- The wall button works but the remote does not (or the other way around)
- Clicking, humming or grinding from the opener unit
- The door stops and reverses when it meets very little resistance — or does not reverse at all
What the assessment involves
- We first check the door with the opener disconnected. If the door itself is heavy or binding, replacing the opener will not solve the problem.
- We then test the opener’s drive, travel limits, force settings, safety sensors and controls.
- We confirm the automatic reversal works before we finish, because that feature protects people, pets and vehicles.
How we explain your options
Many opener faults are fixed by adjustment, sensor alignment or reprogramming. When a part has failed, we explain whether repairing the existing opener is worthwhile.
If replacement makes more sense, we talk through the options that suit your door and how you use it, and agree the choice and cost with you first.
Questions about openers and remotes
Should I try the basic checks before booking?
Yes, simple checks are safe and sometimes solve the problem: make sure the opener has power, replace the remote battery, check that the wall control’s lock feature is off, wipe the sensor lenses and confirm that nothing blocks the beam. Do not adjust springs, cables or the door itself.
Can you program a new remote for my existing opener?
In many cases, yes. Compatibility depends on the opener’s brand, age and radio system. Let us know the opener make if you can see it on the motor unit.
Why does my opener struggle even though it is fairly new?
Often the door is the problem — worn springs or binding hardware make it heavier than the opener is designed to lift. That is why we check the door first.
