Garage door spring service and replacement

Springs do the heavy lifting for your garage door, counterbalancing its weight so the opener and your hands only guide it. When a spring breaks or weakens, the door becomes heavy, uneven and potentially dangerous. We replace springs with parts correctly matched to your door and check the rest of the system while we are there.

What this service covers

  • Torsion springs

The springs mounted on a shaft above the door opening, common on many residential doors.

  • Extension springs

Springs that run alongside the horizontal tracks and stretch as the door closes, along with their safety cables.

  • Matched replacement

Springs sized to your door’s weight and height so it balances properly and the opener is not overworked.

  • Balance adjustment

Checking that the door holds steady partway open and travels evenly once the new springs are in place.

Common signs

A spring problem often shows up as:

  • A loud bang from the garage, followed by the door not opening
  • A visible gap in a torsion spring above the door
  • The door feels very heavy or will only lift a few inches
  • The door rises unevenly or slams down when released
  • The opener strains, hums or stops shortly after starting

What the assessment involves

  1. We confirm which spring has failed and why — age, rust and the number of daily cycles all play a part.
  2. We measure the door and the existing springs so the replacements suit your door rather than being a rough approximation.
  3. We also check the cables, drums, bearings and rollers, because these parts often wear alongside the springs.

How we explain your options

On doors with two springs, we will explain whether replacing both at once makes sense. Springs of the same age tend to wear at a similar rate, but the choice is yours.

If we notice other worn parts, we will tell you what we saw and whether it needs attention now or can wait. We agree the work with you before starting.

Questions about spring service

How do I know whether I have torsion or extension springs?

Torsion springs sit on a metal shaft directly above the closed door. Extension springs run along each side, above the horizontal tracks. You can mention what you see in your request — a photo description is helpful — but there is no need to touch them.

Why did my spring break?

Springs are rated for a certain number of open-and-close cycles and gradually fatigue. Rust and humidity can shorten their life. A break is usually wear rather than something you did.

Can I open the door to get my car out?

We recommend that you do not. With a broken spring the door is far heavier than normal and can fall. Tell us in your request if a vehicle is stuck inside so we understand the situation.
