Garage door cable repair in Houston.
A loose, frayed or snapped lift cable can leave a garage door crooked, stuck, or unsafe to move. If a cable has come off its drum or the door is hanging unevenly, stop using it and keep people and vehicles clear. ForgeGate assesses the cable system and the parts that work with it, and replaces what is damaged.
What lift cables do.
Lift cables connect the bottom of the door to the spring system. On a torsion spring door, the cables wind onto drums at each end of the shaft above the door. On an extension spring door, they run over pulleys connected to the springs. When a cable fails, the door loses support on that side.
Signs of a cable problem.
- A cable that looks frayed, kinked, rusty or slack.
- A cable that has come off its drum or pulley.
- One side of the door sits higher than the other.
- The door stops partway, jerks, or twists as it moves.
- A loose cable hanging beside the door after a loud noise.
Why cables fail.
Cables wear with use and can fray or rust over time. A cable can also come off its drum if the door meets an obstruction, binds in its track, or is out of balance. Because cables work with the springs, drums and bottom brackets, a cable problem is often a sign to check the rest of the system.
What a cable repair assessment involves.
- Securing the door before any work begins.
- Checking both cables, the drums or pulleys, and the bottom brackets.
- Checking the springs, because cable and spring problems often appear together.
- Checking track alignment and the door’s balance once the cables are replaced.

Before you contact us.
You do not need to know which part has failed. These details help us understand the problem:
- Which side of the door is affected, and whether the door is crooked.
- Whether a cable is loose, frayed or off its drum, if you can see it from a safe distance.
- Whether the door is stuck open or closed, and whether a vehicle is trapped inside.
- Your ZIP code and the best number to reach you.

Questions
Can the door run with one cable?
No. A door that has lost a cable is unsupported on one side and can jam, twist or fall. Stop using it and contact a professional.
Should both cables be replaced?
Often it makes sense, because both cables have had the same wear. We will explain what we find on your door and agree the work with you.
Is a cable problem the same as a broken spring?
Not always, but they are connected. A broken spring can leave cables slack, and a cable problem can put strain on the springs. Both are checked during the assessment.
