Why a garage door becomes noisy
A garage door that has become louder is telling you something has changed. Often it is simple wear. Sometimes the noise is an early warning of a part that is close to failing. Listening carefully helps narrow it down.
Squeaking and creaking.
Dry or worn rollers and hinges are a common cause. Rollers wear over time, and metal parts that are no longer lubricated can squeak as the door moves.
Grinding or scraping.
Grinding can come from rollers that are worn or damaged, a track that is bent or out of alignment, or parts of the opener drive. A door that rubs against its track should be checked before the damage spreads.
Rattling and vibration.
Hardware loosens with use. Rattling often means hinges, brackets or track fasteners need attention.
What you can safely do.
- Watch and listen as the door opens and closes, and note where the noise comes from.
- Look for visibly worn rollers, loose hardware or a bent track, without touching springs or cables.
- Follow your door and opener manufacturer’s guidance on lubrication, using a product suited to garage doors.
Do not adjust, tighten or loosen springs, cables, or the brackets at the bottom of the door. These parts are under high tension.
Questions
Will lubrication fix a noisy door?
It can help when the noise comes from dry hinges or rollers. It will not fix worn or damaged parts, a bent track or a balance problem.
