Garage door repair or replacement: what to consider
Many garage door problems are solved with a repair. Sometimes, though, a new door is worth comparing. The right answer depends on your door, not on a general rule. These are the factors we look at with homeowners.
What is actually damaged.
Worn rollers, a broken spring or a damaged cable are usually replaceable parts. Damage to several panels or to the structure of the door is a bigger job, and it is where replacement more often enters the conversation.
The condition of the rest of the door.
A repair restores the part that failed. If the rest of the door is in sound condition, a repair is often the sensible choice. If several parts are worn at the same time, it is worth understanding what else may need attention soon.
How often problems come back.
One repair after many years of use is normal. Repeated faults within a short time can be a sign that the door, its balance or its hardware needs a closer look, and that replacement deserves to be compared.
Matching parts and panels.
Replacing a single damaged section depends on whether a matching part is still available for your door model. When it is not, the choice may be between a visible mismatch and a new door.
What you want from the door.
Appearance, insulation, windows and noise all matter if you use the garage as a workshop or living space, or if you are updating the outside of your home. These are good reasons to consider a new door even when a repair is possible.
The opener and the rest of the system.
A new door may or may not suit your existing opener, depending on its condition and the weight of the new door. Tracks, springs and hardware should all suit the door they support.
Rules for your home.
If your home is in a community with a homeowners association or deed restrictions, check whether a different door style or color needs approval before you order. If the size of the opening would change, ask your city’s permitting office whether a permit is required.
